Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA)
WHAT IS THE LEAVING CERTIFICATE APPLIED?
This is a two-year Leaving Certificate available to students who wish to follow a practical or vocationally orientated Senior Cycle programme. It is one of three Leaving Certificate options offered by Ardscoil na Tríonóide.
WHAT DOES ‘APPLIED’ MEAN?
The LCA allows the student to apply the learning and experiences gained over the two years to practical educational tasks in school, in the workplace and in the wider community.
WHAT SUBJECTS DO LCA STUDENTS STUDY?
Subjects in LCA are divided into 4 sections:
- Vocational Preparation
Vocational Preparation including Work Placements on Fridays.
Guidance.
English and Communication.
- Vocational Education
Vocational Specialism 1- Hotel, Catering and Tourism.
Vocational Specialism 2 - Information and Communication Technology.
Mathematical Applications.
Introduction to ITC.
- General Education
Social Education.
Languages
Year 1 – Gaeilge
Year 2 – French
Arts Education.
Year 1 – Music
Year 2 – Visual Arts.
Leisure and Recreation.
- Elective subjects
Year 1
- Religious Education.
- Visual Arts.
Year 2
HOW DO SUDENTS GAIN CREDITS?
There are a total of 200 credits available to each student.
These credits are earned in THREE ways.
- Key assignments plus 90% attendance in class
- SEVEN major TASKS undertaken over the Two year programme
- A written examination at the end of the year 2

The LCA is awarded at THREE LEVELS:

DO LCA STUDENTS GO ON TO FURTHER EDUCATION AND TRAINING?
YES. The students may apply for most PLC course.
Students should consult the school’s careers counsellors about pathways available after LCA.
HOW DO I APPLY FOR LCA?
An early expression of interest is advised.
Students and parents who are interested in this programme should TICK the LCA BOX on the SENIOR OPTIONS FORM. One may also contact the LCA coordinator.
LCA has an upper limit of 15 places. Interviews are held as part of the process of allocating places.

WHAT ARE ELECTIVE MODULES?
- Four Elective Modules must be chosen from course areas where extra modules are available.
- Two courses, Religious Education and Science also offer modules that can be taken as electives.
- One is not allowed to choose Elective modules from vocational specialisms already being taken.
DO LEAVING CERTIFICATE APPLIED STUDENTS RECEIVE A LEAVING CERTIFICATE?
- Yes, students who successfully complete the programme will receive a Leaving Certificate from the State Examinations Commission.
- All credits awarded will be recorded on the Leaving Certificate Applied parchment.

A Feargal Quinn Award for Amy Doran
The LCANA "Feargal Quinn Awards" are presented each year to students who achieve outstanding results in the Leaving Certificate Applied Examinations. The students final credit total is based on their performance in the Leaving Certificate Applied Examinations over 2 years.
One of the 2018 recipients was Amy Doran a former pupil of Ardscoil na Trionoide, Athy. Amy was presented with her award by Minister of State Kevin Moran, at a ceremony in Athlone on November 24th.
Amy is currently attending Carlow Institute of Further Education where she is studying Business Administrations with Legal Studies.
