Active Schools

Active Schools

The Active School Flag (ASF) is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. The process aims to get more schools, more active, more often.

It is pitched towards all of our students and activities are planned with all fitness levels in mind, not just our already ‘sporty’ students.

ASF is a Department of Education and Skills initiative supported by Healthy Ireland.

Ardscoil na Trionoide was awarded its Active Schools flag in 2017. We are one of the 3% of secondary schools in all of Ireland to have been awarded an Active Schools flag, thanks to the hard work of the Active Schools committee and the teachers involved.

In order to be eligible to apply for the Active Schools flag, and to maintain it, Ardscoil na Trionoide has to ensure that:

  1. All students receive a double timetabled period of PE every week
  2. All students are taught a broad and balanced PE curriculum in line with the prescribed DES syllabi
  3. The PE programme is delivered by qualified PE teachers
  4. The school commits to including an Active School Week as part of its’ annual calendar of events. Our Active Schools week is incorporated into our annual Wellbeing week.

Alongside that, the active schools committee carry out various tasks throughout the year, including

  • Review of the Extra-Curricular Programme
  • Community Mapping – arranging visits from local clubs/teams, particularly during the mocks when the gym is unavailable
  • Active School Week/wellbeing week activities – getting as many students as active as possible during our annual wellbeing week with various fun initiatives.
  • Women in sport module for senior girls
  • Awareness campaign
  • Active schools notice board and activities board
  • Keeping the website and twitter up to date

This year there are 22 students and 7 teachers involved with the active schools committee for 2017-2018. We meet almost every Wednesday to plan our various events and initiatives.

We hope to continue to work towards getting as many of our student body active as often as possible.
